Extraordinary Kids Project

Inclusion with imagination.

The Project

Our mission is simple. Create a coloring book that’s so much fun, you’ll wonder why you’ve never seen it before. And then, donate the book all over the place.

"Extraordinary Kids" is a coloring book starring kids with disabilities and complex medical needs, because all kids deserve to be represented in powerful, creative ways. No story line, no agenda to push, just inclusion with imagination.

Over 40,000 copies donated to date!

Our Goals

Represent

Kids with disabilities and complex medical needs are under-represented in this world. We’re doing our part to combat that by creating unique and empowering vignettes and sharing them as widely as possible.

Entertain

Coloring is a well-known stress reliever…and it’s kind of a blast. By creating these images in the form of a coloring book, we not only provide entertainment for children (particularly those in the hospital), but we also create an opportunity for all kids to take notice, imagine and ask questions.

Educate

This book includes images that may be unfamiliar to many kids (and adults!) That’s kind of the point :) We’ve included a simple visual glossary to help fill in the blanks. We hope that the book opens the door for honest conversation between caregivers and kids and helps expand everyone’s conception of what “normal” looks like.

What People Are Saying

“My brother [requested] one of these for our daughter, Astrid, and my wife and I promptly burst into happy tears when we started reading it (and then we saw her name in the back!) She is a brilliant little kid with cerebral palsy, who uses a walker and also loves fire trucks, so this book...it's hard to put into words.”

— Matt, Parent

“We received these books yesterday and I’ve already heard rave reviews from team members. Everyone is so excited about how the images in the book depict diversity and various abilities. Thank you for this resource to normalize and celebrate their differences. We receive a lot of different resources that are created for children in the pediatric healthcare setting. This is one of the best resources we’ve received in a while, so kudos to you and your partners!”

— Jessica, Child Life Specialist

“I am in awe of the amazing work in this coloring book. As a pediatric occupational therapist and someone who appreciates diversity, this coloring depicts all these special children I treat in such an amazing light. The children that we treat are incredible and this coloring book highlights that. I was so moved by the pictures, even showing them to my husband and he became emotional. I cannot say enough about the work that went into this and I can’t wait for more!”

— Stacy, Occupational Therapist
